Five Website Must-Haves to Keep Your Business Growing

We all know a solid website is essential for any small business today — but knowing you need one and knowing what makes it actually work are two different things. At WR, we've built websites for attorneys, coaches, interior designers, and entrepreneurs across the US, and we keep coming back to the same five website must-haves that separate a site that just exists from one that actively grows your business. Whether you're starting from scratch or refreshing what you have, here's what we focus on:
1. Intuitive Navigation
Think about the last time you visited a website and couldn’t find what you were looking for. Frustrating, right? Clear, intuitive navigation keeps visitors engaged instead of driving them away. We structure each site so users can move through pages naturally and confidently.
A well-structured menu should never have more than 7 items, and the most important pages — like Contact or Services — should always be one click away. We also recommend including a search bar for content-heavy sites, and making sure your logo always links back to the homepage. Small details like these make a big difference in how long someone stays on your site.
2. Mobile Responsiveness
Most people browse on their phones—even if designers are building on desktops. A site that isn’t mobile-friendly risks losing users within seconds. That’s why we treat mobile responsiveness as a top priority, making sure every page looks great and functions smoothly no matter the device.
Google now uses mobile-first indexing, which means it evaluates the mobile version of your site before the desktop version when deciding where to rank you in search results. A site that looks beautiful on a laptop but breaks on a phone isn't just losing visitors — it's actively being penalized. Every site we build at WR is tested across multiple devices before it goes live.
3. Visual Appeal That Matches Your Brand
Your website should feel like your business. Whether you already have established brand assets or we help you create them, the visuals should be cohesive, clean, and appealing across all screen sizes. From color palettes to imagery to layout, we make sure your site tells a consistent story.
This is often where DIY websites fall short. When you build a site without a design background, it's easy to end up with a mix of fonts, clashing colors, or stock photos that don't feel cohesive. A professional designer brings an outside eye that ensures every visual element — from the hero image to the footer — feels intentional and on-brand.
4. Clear Calls to Action (CTAs)
A great website doesn’t just look good—it guides people. Strategic calls to action like Learn More, Contact Us, or Our Story help visitors explore deeper, stay longer, and ultimately connect with your business. Thoughtfully placed CTAs are one of the easiest ways to turn visitors into customers.
The placement of a CTA matters just as much as the wording. A button buried at the bottom of a long page won't convert as well as one positioned above the fold. We typically recommend at least one CTA in the hero section, one mid-page, and one at the footer — each tailored to where a visitor is in their decision-making process.
5. Quality Content
Design and function may draw people in, but content keeps them there. Helpful information, clear messaging, and engaging visuals build trust and establish authority. Whether it’s your service descriptions, blog posts, or About page, strong content communicates your value and encourages visitors to stay, explore, and get in touch.
One of the most overlooked content elements is the About page. Visitors who are on the fence about hiring you will almost always read it before reaching out. A compelling About page that tells your story, explains your process, and shows some personality can be the difference between a bounce and an inquiry. If yours feels stale, that's often the first thing we recommend refreshing.
